My month of October of 2008 started out by going to a book signing event for photojournalist Kevin Rivoli's new book, In Search of Norman Rockwell's America. A book where Kevin matches up some classic Norman Rockwell works with his photographs taken throughout his career. He wanted to prove Rockwell's critics wrong by showing his paintings and illustrations did depict the real America. A week later, I found myself in the Prospect Mountain Diner in Lake George, New York. Shooting from the hip, I photographed this couple sitting at one of the diner's booths. While I am no Kevin Rivoli, I think this scene would be something Mr. Rockwell might have wanted to paint. Norman Rockwell’s America

The 2008 Columbus Day weekend in upstate New York was one for the ages. Weather could not have been better with Summer-like warmth and cool, pleasant nights. I travelled to the resort village of Lake George, New York looking for colorful fall foliage in the lower Adirondacks and wasn't disappointed. The Queen of American Lakes as Lake George is aptly known as enhanced the colors with its clear blue waters.
Butterflies were taking full advantage of the weather around Lake George's parks and visitor center which were beautifully landscaped.
Everywhere I went in October, the fall colors were brilliant and showed up about two weeks earlier than in 2007. From Lake George's Prospect Mountain summit trail (pictured here) to my home town, the trees put on a magnificent show of yellows, oranges, and reds.

This view from the Eagle's Nest overlook stop on the Prospect Mountain Veterans Memorial Highway shows what I call the cobalt blue sky of a beautiful October day. The color is unlike any other time of the year.

Following directions to Shelving Rock Falls was easy using a book from Foot Print Press called 25 Short Hikes and Interesting Walks in the Lake George, NY Region. I used this book to follow an historic walk around the village of Lake George and a forest hike near Warrensburg, New York. The author's descriptions of each of the 25 hikes they document will help you determine which ones you feel you can handle.

What's an October without a walk through a cemetery with Halloween fast approaching. The Riverview Cemetery in Baldwinsville, like many small towns, hold the history of it's people on the stones loved ones memorialized them with.
