Letchworth State Park Photo Essay : William Pryor Letchworth gifted 1,000 acres to New York State in 1907. These acres represent some of the most picturesque in the US. Coined the "Grand Canyon of the East", todays Letchworth State Park features a deep gorge cut by the Genesee River, three waterfalls, and miles of hiking trails on 14,350 acres. The Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) back in the 1930's built stone walls, stairs and bridges giving people access to each of the Genesee River waterfalls and are still in use today. The original Glen Iris Inn, where Mr. Letchworth hosted US presidents and other influential dignitaries, is now a restaurant and popular inn for guests of the park. The park is about 35 miles south of Rochester, New York.

The Geese of Montezuma : In the last decade, Canadian Geese have gone from a symbol of nature to a nusiance species as they have learned to take advantage of Man's surburban lifestyle. I've seen park areas covered in their droppings and geese being feed from people's hands who then attack when the people stop feeding them.

However, when seen in the environment from which they have evolved in, they are still a very beautiful and majestic bird. Especially in the Spring, as their plummage is very colorful and healthy. I recently spent some time in the Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (Click Here for More Information) near Seneca Falls, NY.

New York Waterfalls in HDR : I took a Waterfall Safari in the southern tier of New York State in October. The weather was not ideal and I thought a new processing technique I had learned recently would make the photos I took better. This technique is called High Dynamic Range, or HDR, photography. Using software, I took three photos of the same scene taken with different exposures and combined them to increase the range of light which can not be captured by today's digital cameras in one image.

The Taughannock Falls and Robert H. Terman State Parks I visited are located near Ithaca, New York. They are about a 60 minute drive south of Syracuse and hold some of the most unique and beautiful post-glacial gorges and waterfalls in the world. Well maintained trails with stairs make hiking to grand vistas and waterfalls fairly easy and some are even handicap accessible (see park websites for further information).
